Whitehorse Masters Soccer
Also known as the Mixed Masters, Co-ed Masters, or Co-ed Oldtimers

Providing over-the-hill soccer excitement since 1998

PLEASE NOTE - The Masters has evolved into two new groups, Whitehorse Coed Soccer (open adult), and the Whitehorse Rapids (over-40 men). Coed had 60 registered players in the 1999-2000 indoor season, and 120 players in the 2000 outdoor season, rivaling the men's and women's leagues in size in its first season. The Rapids are intended to be a travelling team and to provide scrimmage competition for other local travelling teams. - D. Hitch, 9 August 2000

Who is a Master?

Someone who is 35 years of age or older. The Whitehorse Masters have been known to be a little flexible about this rule for players with the right attitude. No experience or fitness is necessary. For our activities for our first summer season see our 1998 Annual Report. And for the second seaason see the 1998-99 Annual Report.

1999-2000 Indoor Action

Last winter we had a large proportion of younger players join us to fill the ranks. We did not turn anyone away. This fall, the situation was looking the same. At the same time, a coed team of younger adults had formed at Whitehorse Motors and was looking for the indoor coed league that they'd heard about. But there wasn't one. After much soul-searching and discussion the Masters decided to take part in a new coed league instead of repeating last winter's program.

The Whitehorse Coed Indoor league now (December 1, 1999) has four teams: Whitehorse Motors, Alkan Airheads, Masters, and X-Filers. This format has attracted many local adults to soccer, some of whom are old enough to be Masters. New corporate teams are welcome. To get on the waiting list call Jane Wilberforce @ 667-2803. Women are especially needed for this league. No experience or fitness necessary.
Games are currently:
• Wednesdays, 8:45 and 9:45 pm, Selkirk School
• Sundays, 7 and 8 pm, Selkirk School
We also have a drop-in time for pick-up games:
• Fridays, 7-9 pm, Selkirk School
The league plays with a strict no-contact policy. Because the gym is small, the game is 4-aside. The nets are lying down giving low goal mouths, and there are no goalies. There are almost no stoppages in play. But we do stop if someone falls down. At least one woman must be on the floor for each team at all times.

2000 Summer Season Registration

Last year we began the preseason with registration in the third week of May at the George White field behind Vanier school (formerly Riverdale school, formerly Jekyll school). The fee was $40. In the summer of 2000 we may help to start a coed summer league instead of trying the format of 1998 or 1999.

The online registration form from last summer contains additional league information.
